Alumni Rep: Jess McIvor
The Alumni Rep is important in ensuring ex-students and ex-members of the society are still included in events, competitions and lessons. The Alumni Rep helps form an important link between current members and ex-members. They also help with general society duties such as Southampton Friendly and Strictly
Q: How long have you been dancing, what level are you now?
Ive been doing ballroom since I started uni, five years ago 😱, but I’d done other types of dance like ballet before.
Q: On a scale of 1-4, would you be able to help someone with a move or steps if they were stuck? 1 being fairly useless because you don’t know the steps yourself and 4 being a dance professional
I’d say a 3. something, I’m always happy to help people out with steps but I’m terrible at remembering the names of them!
Q: What is your vice of choice?
Trashy reality shows! I binge watched all of TOWIE when I was writing my masters dissertation, and now I’m addicted
Q: What degree do you study?
PHD Modern Languages/History
Q: Do you manage to balance your degree alongside dancing well?
I managed it for my undergrad, so we’ll have to see how the PhD goes 😂. I found that I liked using dance as a break between lectures or writing, and going to the MPS was a really good way for me to relieve stress
Q: Give us your favourite dance top tip
Always keep a smile on your face!
Q: What is your favourite/most entertaining memory with dancing with SUBLDS
I’ve had so many fab times with SUBLDS so it’s hard to just pick one! One of the most entertaining times I’ve had was doing an imitation Paso at last years Bath Ball, as well as organising and going on the Winchester pub crawl when I was social sec, but I think my favourite memory is probably going to our national competition in Blackpool as a beginner and dancing in the Empress Ballroom for the first time.
Q: What event do you most look forward to this year in SUBLDS?
Dinner dance! I love getting everyone all together for food, dancing, prizes; especially because alumni tend to come back for it so it’s a kind of mini reunion as well.
Q: Why should people join the society? Give us your favourite reason
We’re one of the friendliest societies out there, and everyone really makes an effort to make sure that everyone feels happy and included! SUBLDS is like one, big, happy family who are obsessed with tan and sparkles, and I’ve met so many amazing people thanks to it!
That unforunately concludes Fred and Ginger’s interviews with the committee.
We really enjoyed getting to know the committee and hope you all did too! We also look forward to the amazing year ahead filled with dancing, tan, heels and trophies!
