Ginger and I are back from our holidays in the caribbean. Just a bit later than expected due to the Hurricane.
We wanted to take this Opportunity to introduce our first committee member, Emma Collins.
What do you see your role in the committee being?
I’m President so I’m in charge of making sure the everyday society stuff runs smoothly while making sure everyone is happy and enjoying the society!
How long have you been dancing, what level are you now, and on a scale of 1- 4 if someone was stuck learning a move would you be able to help them? 1 being more or less completely useless and 4 being Emma C.
I have been Ballroom and Latin dancing since I was 4 or 5, so 15ish years! I dance at an intermediate/advanced level now which puts me in good shape to help out any members which are struggling with steps or generally just have questions. I’m going to say on that scale it’s gotta be a 4 as I am her!
What is your vice of choice?
I drink a ridiculous amount of Coke! In my first year I went through 10L in 2 days! I know healthy right… luckily I’m not that bad now though!
What degree do you do?
I’m going into my third year of my Biomedical Science Degree. I find it really interesting to find out how the body works and what happens when it goes wrong and why.
What is your best/most entertaining memory of your first year at uni dancing? Do you have any tips for beginners to have a similar amount of fun?
My most entertaining memory from first year of SUBLDS was the ongoing entertainment everyone found when I spoke! My Essex accent seemed to amuse everyone and I had no idea my accent was even that obvious but I was rewarded at the end of the year with the ‘Best Foreign Accent’ award- I mean who could wish for more!
I’d say throw yourself at SUBLDS, don’t hold anything back and you’ll have so much fun that the memories will create themselves!
Recommend 3 songs, A movie, A book and what is your favourite piece of cutlery?
As I said I am a lover of all the cheesy party dances, 5, 6, 7, 8. Superman and Saturday Night can always bring a smile to my face.
Walking on Sunshine is a terrible movie but it’s so bad it’s great!
I haven’t read a book in a while, and I can’t think of any titles of any I have read… sorry!
My favourite piece of cutlery would be a fork, you can use it for the most things so that just makes sense.
What is the coolest thing you have ever done? What do you wish people would ask you about?
I wouldn’t class any of the things I have done as ‘cool’ so here are a few things I have done. I walked the South Downs Way, I’ve competed in the Blackpool Tower Ballroom and I was a vegetarian for 9 years just to prove a point to my Dad. So guess you can ask me about any of them?
What event do you most look forward to this year in SUBLDS?
I’m most looking forward to Pure Dance this year I think, I’m excited to do some more choreography and see my vision come to life!
Why do you keep dancing at SUBLDS, when you have a degree to do, It seems irresponsible to me?
I keep dancing at SUBLDS because I couldn’t imagine my life without dancing. I actually chose what universities to apply to partly by the Ballroom and Latin Societies they had. I find that dancing is an amazing way to relieve stress, even during exam season I take regular dancing breaks!
Any final words for the fans?
Nope… just come to SUBLDS! But seriously, I love this society- it helps get me through the university year with the competitions, socials and performances. I always have so much fun along the way and I’m sure it’d be the same for you!
I hope this gave you a bit of an insight into the one woman dream team that is Emma Collins. Keep your blow holes open more to come from fred tomorrow!
